The Mistake That Killed 137 Passengers

I used to hate fire drills.

…until I heard about the SS Morro Castle.

Almost a hundred years ago the SS Morro Castle, a luxury ocean liner carrying 540 passengers, was speeding towards New York.

Passengers were uneasy, and with good reason; the Morro was sailing straight into a hurricane.

To make matters worse, it had just been announced that the captain had died of

a heart attack earlier that day.

The Morro was no exception. It had enough life boats to carry 4 times its passenger load.

…but…

At 2:50am almost everyone was asleep. Then the fire alarms went off. What had started as a small fire in a storage closet was quickly turning into a raging disaster.

…and within 20 minutes, the whole ship was in flames.

And the biggest problem of all: no one knew what to do.

While regulations had been requiring ships to carry life-boats and flotation devices… no regulations had been made requiring ships to show its passengers what to do in the case of an emergency.

In fact, even the CREW members didn’t know what to do.

The result: chaos.

Before long, most of the Morro’s passengers were trapped on the side of the ship where there were no life-boats. People had scrambled onto the deck without grabbing their life-vests.

Eventually, passengers were left with no choice…

…so they jumped into the hurricane. Without flotation devices.

In the end, 137 people died. Even though the Morro had the TOOLS to save everyone, it had not provided the TRAINING needed to effectively use those tools.
